The novel is about the friendship between two young boy sopranos in 1938. One is a Jewish refugee fleeing Nazi Germany and the other is a self willed boy from Llantwit Major in South Wales. They embark upon a journey that takes them all over the country and forces them to mature beyond their years. Their friendship is sorely tested by a chorus girl of dubious origin who punishes them both with a betrayal that neither of them will ever forget.
